The shop is now open 11-6 Monday to Saturday and we will be reopening on Sundays from August 30th, 11-6.In 1958 the BBC Radiophonic Workshop opened with the aim to enhance in the main, drama output on the Third Programme (now Radio 3) following the development of new electronic music techniques emanating from Europe.Their work expanded across the BBC to take in TV drama (especially sci-fi), schools programmes and themes.
The latter being their most celebrated and well known work, Delia Derbyshires treatment of Ron Grainers theme for Doctor Who. This collection, originally released by BBC Records in 1979 to celebrate 21 years of the workshop appears for the first time in its full original form on CD. From The Goons (Bloodnocks Stomach) to the Interval Signal to Doctor Who and Great Zoos Of The World this is a fascinating chronicle of some of the most innovative music ever made. These ground-breaking compositions providing a major influence on music from The Beatles and Pink Floyd and onwards into the contemporary world of Aphex Twin, Orbital and The Chemical Brothers. The Radiophonic Workshop, I loved all that, it fascinated me, and still does. A huge influence on contemporary electronica it showcases the way-ahead-of-their-time compositions of various TV themes and idents. Through a Glass Darkly is a seminal document in terms of synth music. Peter Howell began work on the album in 1977 with the brief to create music to fill one side of an LP. The result is a low budget classic and ranks alongside great works by the likes of Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre. A vinyl only reissue of Paddy Kingsland of the BBC Radiophonic Workshops 1973 solo album, Fourth Dimension. Much sought after by synth-sniffers the world over, this record features plenty of VCS 3 and Delaware Synthi 100 action backed by a 1970s session band. In 1984, Roger Limb - with the aid of the Radiophonic Workshop - took on the job of scoring the BBCs adaptation of Masefields 1935 fantasy adventure classic The Box of Delights. Silva Screen are reissuing the score which combined orchestral work with the kind of innovative electronic tampering youd expect from the Radiophonic Workshop. Possum is a new British horror film from the mind of Matthew Holness (Garth Marenghis Dark Place). It is the first time that The Radiophonic Workshop have scored a film. Their 50 years as pioneering electronic sound-makers, known for the original Dr. ![]() This will be of fascination to fans of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop as it is a 1969 collaboration between two of their best and brightest and American musician David Vorhaus with whom they then went on to form the ridiculous experimental electronic band White Noise. These tracks were intended as TV production music and many were used on cult 60s programme The Tomorrow People. Futuristic BBC Radiophonic Workshop synthesizers and super sound effects blend to perfectly accompany and conjure up stunning images of the Earths environments. Interestingly this is actual new material by the Radiophonic Workshop (no BBC as the corporation does no funding of weird music anymore). The collective have produced a new suite of synth compositions that hark back to their classic work while exploring new areas of sound and combines analogue synth and cutting edge digital technologies. The BBC Radiophonic Workshop was responsible for nurturing talents such as Delia Derbyshire, and developing madness through experimental hand-cut tape loops and signal generators before synthesizers were available. This is a reissue of the first work made by them with the invention of the first digital polyphonic sampler, which cut their workload massively. The legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop should need no introduction at all, being the unprecedented space in which the likes of Delia Derbyshire and Daphne Oram were able to conjure electronic magic. The Vendetta Tapes is a collection of rare cues, tunes and sonic oddities lovingly crafted by John Baker The Radiophonic Workshop for a 1960s mafia caper TV show. Much of this has never been released before, and plenty of truly fascinating sounds are sprinkled all over. Classic early electronic works from the likes of John Baker, David Cain and Delia Derbyshire on this album which was initially released in 1968 to celebrate ten years of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop.
